Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that’s used to diminish facial folds and wrinkles. When it’s injected into a muscle, it blocks nerve signals that stimulate muscle contraction. As a result, the targeted muscles relax.
What types of facial wrinkles are treated with Botox?
As you get older, two types of wrinkles appear on your face. Static wrinkles develop due to natural age-related changes. For example, your skin thins out, gets drier, and produces less collagen and elastin, so it loses strength and elasticity.
The second type of wrinkles, called dynamic wrinkles, occur as you continuously use muscles to make facial expressions, such as squinting. These repetitive muscle movements produce wrinkles that become deeply embedded.
Botox treats dynamic wrinkles by relaxing the muscles, which effectively diminishes or eliminates:
- Crow’s feet
- Frown lines
- Forehead furrows
- Bunny lines on the upper nose
- Neck bands
Does Botox affect your natural expressions?
A Katalyst Wellness team member targets a few small areas of specific muscles responsible for the wrinkles being treated. The rest of your facial muscles continue to work normally and reflect your facial expressions, so your appearance remains natural.
What should you expect during and after the procedure?
Before your procedure, the team evaluates your skin and talks with you about the changes you want to make in your appearance. If Botox is the best option to reach your goals, Dr. Camhi and his team will discuss what you can expect and the type of local anesthetic that he may use.
A Botox session generally takes about 15 minutes, but the length depends on the treatment area. After the injections, you may have slight redness, swelling, or bruising. These side effects are temporary, and you can cover them with makeup before leaving the office.
You won’t need extensive downtime, but the team at Katalyst Wellness may advise you to wait several hours before engaging in vigorous activities. You’ll receive more specific self-care instructions based on your individual procedure.
How long will your results last?
It doesn’t take long for Botox to smooth the targeted wrinkles, so you’ll begin to see results in 1-2 days. Although Botox gradually wears off, your results last around four months, then you can get another injection to maintain your results. Your results may last longer with future injections.*
